The Toy
Once upon a time, when nary a new battery could be found, I decided to invest in a Hitachi Magic Wand. It's a classic, and one that discerning consumers have been raving about for years.The so-called Cadillac of vibrators, the Hitachi Magic Wand consists of a 12-inch handle featuring an on/off switch and speed selector, and a large bulbous end that vibrates. And man … does it vibrate! This is THE vibe for anyone looking for uncompromised intensity.
The HMW plugs in to a standard outlet and offers a variety of optional attachments to customize your experience. The exterior parts are plastic, the vibrating bulb also being distressed with a pattern similar to leather grain. Cleaning this vibe with a mild soap is fine - no special cleaners necessary.
The Highs
This is the most powerful vibrator I have ever had the pleasure of using. Hitachi offers a plethora of attachments for the wand, from protuberantly phallic to twisty spirals and fanciful nubs. Attachments are typically available in latex, vinyl or silicone. If the Hitachi attachments don't meet your needs, there are a few knock-off companies that make their own fun shapes to fit the Hitachi. Use with caution if your model came with a warranty - you won't want to void it.
The great thing about plug-in vibes is that they never run out of steam. Hitachi cautions not to use the Magic Wand for more than an hour at a time, lest the motor overheat. Honestly, with vibrations this intense, you'll burn out far before this baby does.


The Lows
There can be such a thing as too much power. For some people, the Magic Wand might just be too much. Because there are only two intensity levels, it may not offer enough adjustment for your needs. Also, with great power comes great, power-tool like noises - like the kind your roommate will hear in the next room. Think more than an electric razor, but not quite as noisy as crushing ice in a blender. The package I purchased came with one attachment, a long, blue appendage with the shape (and allure) of a magic marker. Yuck. It's advisable to look for one that includes an attachment that appeals to you. Also, plug-in vibes are not portable; outdoorsy types beware.
